From clearing acne scars to banishing bags, meet the does-it-all tool you should be using on your skin.

Dermarolling, microneedling, facial resurfacing… whatever you call it, chances are the celebrities on your insta-feeds are getting it. The new ‘it’ facial of the moment, promises to reduce acne-scars, wrinkles, pigmentation and even dark circles. But what’s the deal? LOOK investigates…

How Dermarolling Works

The skin is cleansed, and numbing cream can be applied. Then, either using a resurfacing machine, handheld dermaroller or pen device, tiny needles are used to make a controlled ‘injury’ on the skin surface which in turn, jumpstarts the bodies own natural repair system.

This stimulates the skin into repairing itself by increasing the blood flow, collagen and elastin production to the area.

After just one treatment the skin is brighter, plumper and more radiant; and with ongoing treatments, scarring, pigmentation and even stretch marks can be targeted.

Does Dermarolling Hurt?

LOOK’s Junior Designer Megan tried out the Venus Vita resurfacing treatment at joshiclinic.co.uk (£200 per session) and loved it. Yes she admitted it’s a little uncomfortable, but totally worth it!

“My skin was a little red after, and looking back, going shopping in Zara post treatment was probably a bad idea! As recommended I used Avene Cicalfate Cream and wore minimal make-up for the following week.

After just one treatment, my pores were visibly smaller, my wrinkles were really reduced (especially my angry frown line!) and my acne scars GONE! Plus, the results have stayed to this day… 3 weeks after!”

Can Dermarolling Reduce My Under Eye Bags?

By stimulating collagen production, dermarolling will help to gradually thicken the under eye area, helping to improve the appearance of dark circles, crepey skin and smooth lines & wrinkles. If that’s not something to shout about, we don’t know what is!

The Harley Medical Group offers a Derma FNS treatment for under-eyes. Prices start from £245.

Can I Dermaroll it at home?

Although at-home dermarolling is huge in the US, the UK is still playing catch up. You wont be able to pick up a dermaroller in your local Boots, instead head to Amazon where you can get your hands on one for as little as £3.

Each one has a different needle thickness, so make sure you start off with a 0.5 which is the lowest. Pull the area of your skin you want to treat taut and using light pressure, gently roll it across your face. Don’t keep going back and forth over the same place.

Your skin will be a bit red after, and you wont be able to apply any makeup over it so it’s best to do your rolling just before bed.

If you don’t fancy the needles FaceGym’s Gold Derma Roller, £30 will help plump your face at home, without puncturing your skin. Roll in an upward/downward motion across the face, repeating four times in a series of gentle movements.
